For our latest West Coast IPA we dip into hair band history and file ‘sex’ under the letter ‘x’. The result is this slightly neurotic 7.1% West Coast IPA synthesized with Simcoe’s bat-biting punch. You could call it our ode to late 80s KISS, but it’s more an ode to glam rock metal before lumberjack grunge kicked in. Sipping a heavy IPA never sounded quite so nice.

Got this one from the Duvel guy in Utrecht
From a 440ml can into a pint glass
Canned 2 January 2020
West Coast IPA
APPEARANCE: Pours a two finger, looser looking, foamy white head with good retention. Perfectly clear gamboge orange with next to no carbonation evident. Head slowly recedes to a full wisp and clings to the sides of the glass.
SMELL: Some caramel malts, honeydew melon, citrus notes, like lemon and grapefruit, with some lovely piney aromas on the nose. Bold and west coasty.
TASTE: Caramel and melon sweetness up front, with citrus flavors, grapefruit and some grassy notes at the swallow. Bold finish of melon sweetness, citrus, grapefruit, piney hop flavors and some decent bitterness linger on the palate. Flavorful and plenty of hop character.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy on the palate, smooth, goes down smooth and finishes somewhat dry. Some bitterness lingers. Good feel.
OVERALL: Good stuff. Solid west coast IPA that reminds me of the US stuff that was standard a few years ago. Nice hop character and a solid malt base as support. One worth checking out if you’re looking to hark back to when IPAs were more straight forward. Recommended.

Pours a clear, deep golden coloration with a medium, frothy head. Smells of biscuity malt and quite floral, citrus hops. Taste is dominated by sweet, biscuity malt and floral hops, with lighter notes of citrus: grapefruit, tangerine and perhaps some light grassy, herbal accents. Finishes rather sweet, with a very light bitterness and some citrus hops lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.
Het Uiltje don't manage to disappoint me often, but honestly this is a pretty terrible West Coast IPA that is way too sweet and floral for the style, while at the same time completely lacking the bitter, resinous hops and caramel malt backbone that I expect from it. Reminds me a lot of a similarily terrible WCIPA I had by FrauGruber a while ago with a very similar flavor profile.
