Pours a pitch-black coloration with a small, creamy head. Smells of roasted, smoked, slightly peated malt, chocolate and dark fruit, with hints of vanilla and licorice as well. Taste is great balance between roasted, smoked, peaty, caramel malt and prominent notes of chocolate and dark fruit: raisin, plum, as well as lighter notes of coffee, vanilla and licorice and just a hint of tobacco, leather and oak. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some smoked/peated malt, chocolate, vanilla and licorice lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a rich jody and light/medium carbonation.
An excellent Scotch barrel-aged Imperial Stout that really shows off those smoked, peaty notes nicely without them becoming too overbearing, balanced excellently against some chocolate and dark fruits, with lighter vanilla, coffee and licorice providing additional complexity here. There's some sweetness to this, which gets balanced very nicely by the smoked and bitter notes though. All in all quite an excellent example of the style, with a great balance and complexity to it.
