Imperial stout with salted caramel and pretzel
APPEARANCE: Clear black pour yields a two finger, medium looking, fizzy, foamy tan head with very good retention. Black body with medium levels of carbonation. Head slowly fizzes down to a full, foamy wisp and ring. Slight wisp and ring remain but leave no real lacing on the glass.
SMELL: Roasted and burnt malts, tobacco and leather, some espresso coffee beans, caramel and some lightly salted aromas on the nose. Plenty of alcohol as well. Bold.
TASTE: Roasted flavors, bunt malts, leather, tobacco, ashy flavors with salt flavors and some caramel sweetness up front. Some booze and more ashy tobacco at the swallow, moving into a bold finish of roasted and charred malts, leather, tobacco, some bitter espresso, lightly salted bready notes, and some decent alcohol lingers on the palate. Plenty boozy and burnt.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamier on the palate, goes down surprisingly smooth, a bit of a burn at the swallow, and finishes mouth-coating. Some decent heat lingers.
OVERALL: An interesting one. I’ve always found Mind Your Step a bruiser of a stout that’s a touch too ashy and burnt for my palate, but that said, the lightly salted touch is well-measured and adds a fun dimension to the beer. An interesting take on an already solidly-brewed beer, and it certainly masks it’s hulking ABV very well. Well worth checking out if you get the chance. Cheers!
