Hop Stuff Renegade IPA
on tap @ Thomas Rigby's, Liverpool, UK 29 Mar 2015

Notes: Clear amber body with golden highlights beneath a dense head of bright white foam. The head retention and lacing are excellent with solid walls of lacing displaying thicker rings where each sip was taken. Aroma expresses mild citrus (mainly orange), and some floral and leafy notes over a grainy, almost toasty-but-not-toasty malt base. The flavor delivers more caramel in the grainy maltiness, and some minor apple and pear along with the orange peel. A median bitterness balances it nicely; and it's medium bodied and smooth across the palate. The finish is average, lingering just right with a passing mix of all of the previously mentioned components.

Purchased from UTOBEER recently, coming in a 330ml slim brown bottle, bottle-conditioned; bottled on 29/10/2013, BB 29/04/2014, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass. Notes: according to the brewers, this beer is brewed using Maris Otter malt, blended with Citra, Cascade and “a little ‘Summit’ else on the hop front”.

A: pours a lightly murky, dark amber colour, coming with a short-lived frothy pale beige head and rather mild carbonation.
S: on the nose, the initial impression is that the yeast sediments have worked to increase the overripe fruit-like esters, as well as accentuating a somewhat nectar-ish, intense sweetness. Given a very good swirl, still the melon-ish and pear-ish estery fruity notes dominate, against a pretty loose malt background. Not unpleasant, but the structure really is nowhere to be “sniffed”…
T: lightly carbonated and spicy on the impact, immediately the flavour is lightly green-ish, acidic-sweet malty, plummy fruity, etc., followed by random notes of spices, flavours of zesty citrus and sprigy hops. Not assertively bitter at first, but it’d feel so if one ignored the weak-ish malt base, or at least it is weak on the palate/impact. Chewy and intensifying-ly zingy in the finish, along with more lingering yeasty notes that seem to be a consistent element from the nose to the palate.
M&O: softly carbonated, just enough to make it refreshing-ish, while the body remains medium, neither overbearing nor thin. It’s hard to say I like it or not, but at least my palate tells me that the yeast sediments have definitely clouded the brewers’ work in delivering an assertively hoppy pale ale, or so I’ve interpreted from the back label’s description.
