What happens when you combine an unusual IPA malt from the East Coast of Ireland with Amarillo, Simcoe and Citra hops? You get a rare Double IPA, drenched with the flavor and aroma of nectarines, tangerines, and pine. New IPAs are common, but true adventures can lead to something Few & Far between.

We got four (4) school days in before we broke this afternoon for a four-day Labor Day break! 8=O The way that I see it, they want me to CANtinue The CANQuest (tm) with a couple of ADIPAs/AIIPAs since I do not have to get up for an early start.

I was anxious to Crack! open the vent & get started on a slow, gentle C-Line Glug since I have a long night ahead of me. I came home, caught a nap & now I have the Pirates/Rockies game on as acCANpaniment. I am headed to PHL & its suburbs tomorrow for some beerventures, but not until late-morning. I watched in rapt fascination as it foamed up to form just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, tawny head with good retention, leaving a load of lacing behind in its wake. Color was a gorgeous solid-Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. Nose was redolent with hops, especially pine, but I also smelled naughty Simcoe the kitty doing her business in there somewhere. Mmm. Mouthfeel was full, thick & creamy like a dollop had been scooped into my mouth & ladled onto my tongue. I expect no less in/from the style. The taste made me want to weep for all of the time that I spent drinking tropical AIPAs. This was much more my speed - loads of pine initially, followed by an orange/tangerine citrusiness as well as a good dose of heat to ensure that I was awake & paying attention. Phew! It was a real sipper, forcing me to go slow & take my time. Fine by me. It led me to wonder about the Irish malts that they used - what were they & what did they add to the equation? Hmm. Finish was cool, dry, minty & just really a pleasant way to begin the evening. YMMV.

Can dated "best by 10/27/18" into pint glass. Pours a hazy deep amber with a fine, off-white head. Initial impression is very juicy and noticeably sweet, with caramel and citrus dominating. Some pine resin notes, but they are definitely secondary. Mouthfeel is very slick and smooth - alcohol is quite well hidden. Finish is sweet, but morphs to a slight lingering bitterness. I'm not sure that I could drink this all evening, but the first one is quite enjoyable!

On tap in a good old pint glass. $9.00 in September, 2018. Yikes.
Clean see-through amber color with a 2F billowy white head. Lots of sticky lacing. Sturdy appealing look.
Strong citrus, pine, candied malt, some stone fruit.
Orange, pineapple, pine, mint, caramelized malt. Bold and bright flavor.
Hoppy, malty, medium body. Hop finish that buries the sugar and alcohol.
I liked the look right away, no disappointment moving forward. I'll order it again, happily.

$ 4.00 (Including tax)/16 oz can ($ 0.250/oz) from Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. Reviewed 9/23/18.
“Best By 10/28/18” on bottom of can. In cooler at store. Stored at 42 degrees and served at 42 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
Appearance – 3.5.
Body – Orange, slight haze.
Head – Large (Maximum 4.2 cm, aggressive center pour), off-white, medium density, average retention, diminishing to a five to seven mm ring and a thin complete layer with some islands of bubbles.
Lacing – None.
First pour – Medium yellow, clear.
Aroma – 4 – Pine and citrus fruits, moderately strong. The pine fades completely away and the citrus weakens but remains. Toward the end, some malt appears.
Flavor – 4 – Begins with malt as in a scotch ale, and some citrus. A little less sweet than a scotch ale. As the beer warms up, some of the hops bitterness becomes distinct. It ends with a moderate malty bitterness with a long hang-time. No alcohol (8.2% ABV), no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3 – Medium, watery, soft carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 3.75 – Despite the absence of lacing, this is still an attractive brew. The initial aroma makes me want to quickly drink it. I like the flavor of the malt backbone to be noticeable in an IPA and this one certainly is present. Overall, an interesting drink, one which easily could be on a rotating basis.
