Served in a tulip
Absolute pitch black appearance. Super slick and oily in the glass. The viscous body was topped by a thin, finely beaded, mocha colored film that quickly dissolved. No lacing whatsoever.
The aroma was outstanding. Nice mix of stout-like qualities and notes one might find in a coquito. Huge fresh coconut presence. Loads of vanilla too. Quite milky and sweet. Vanilla ice cream came to mind. Powdered cocoa was also apparent, along with subtle baking spice notes. A sweet, robust maltiness was noticeable as well. Maybe some creamed coffee. Really rich and nicely balanced.
The flavor was similar to the aroma and also quite interesting. Malty and robust up front. Nice balance of roasted and sweet caramel malts. Vanilla notes appeared as the beer moved along the palate. Lots of fresh coconut too. Roasted malts were again noticeable on the back end and in the finish. A touch of char lingered after the swallow.
Terrific frothy, fluffy mouthfeel. Fuller bodied for the style. The liquid contained an ultra fine, zippy effervescence that turned super creamy and slick on the palate.
Though I have never actually tried a coquito, this milk stout showcased the individual components one might find in the drink quite well. All in all, a really interesting and thoroughly enjoyable collaboration by the creative folks at Finback and Mikkeller.

16oz. can into Night Shift stemware.
Nose is sweet cream, lactose, whole milk, coconut, cinnamon, chocolate, molasses, fudge and roasted malt. Sweet, silky and pungent. Delicious! Beer opens coconut, chocolate, cinnamon and anise. Hints of brownie, sweet cream and lactose in the middle with touches of dark dried fruit. Finish is cocoa powder, semi-sweet chocolate and more coconut and cinnamon. Nice complexity and a super complementary flavor profile. Body is medium to full with low carbonation. Smooth and rich on the palate and goes down slick and soft with a sticky, lingering aftertaste.
As far as pastry stouts go, this ranks up there with the best of them. I'm not sure it tastes like Coquito... but it sure is delicious!
