I still don't quite know how to add a "sour IPA" type beer to BA, so I went ahead and added this as an American IPA. This is a pretty new beer, but unlike normal Finback stuff I've had, it doesn't have a can date on the bottom. This happened with Lamplighter a month or two back as well, so maybe their dating system broke or something. I assume this is about 2-3 weeks old at most, considering typical freshness considerations by this brewery when it comes to stock showing up in my area. It's probably pretty fresh, in other words.
Pours an opaque, surprisingly deep-orange color with some golden highlights if I hold it to direct light. Almost has a "peach bellini"/pineapple juice appearance, what with the quickly dissipating eggshell-white head and all. No real legs or lace to speak of. Slightly sudsy but it's mostly got that ineffectual appearance to the head that I associate heavily with lacto in stuff like this (or Berliners, or goses, etc.).
This has been hopped with Citra and Mosaic, which is kinda the "can't-go-wrong" hop combo du-jour of the past couple years, and you can totally tell. It's got a lot of nice, fresh-squeezed juiciness that reminds me once again of pineapple plus a helping of guava and passion fruit. Light notes of Tang/tangerine peel and an almost minty aspect that seems to come out here and there. Grassy with a little bit of funk as well. Smells like it will be very enjoyable while simultaneously not really rocking the boat or deviating from established "sour IPA"/"dry-hopped sour" conventions, which is totally fine by me.
Solid palate with a nice tangy hit of lemony acidity and passion fruit right upfront followed by a kiss of wheat, mango, and pineapple-like pulpiness. Surprisingly, this isn't bracingly carbonated nor is it overly-dry. It drinks very much like a normal IPA with a hit of enjoyable sourness. The Mosaic gives a little bit of dankness to the proceedings, while the Citra seems to carry a lot of the tropical elements to their logical conclusion. This is a good effort by Finback, that really stays pretty much in the defined region of "sour IPA" and doesn't deviate much. There isn't a lot of complexity here, as the tartness curbs a lot of what the hops could be doing (in my opinion), but I'd rather drink and review this than another plain ol' Citra/Mosaic IPA any day of the week, so your mileage may vary.
