Where are all the Finback drinkers on this site? Feels like I add one or two new Finback beers a week, but perhaps they really just pump out a lot of beers. Seems like these guys and Mast Landing have been a few of my go-to breweries that have actually ramped up production of new beers during the COVID-19 pandemic, and that's admirable for sure. Shiny Feature is a fresh (5/11/20, making it nine days old as of this review) hazy IPA clocking in at 7.2% ABV and featuring dry-hop additions of Sabro, 007 (Idaho 7), and Mosaic. Sounds delicious and probably pretty unique, so let's get into it.
Pours the typical yeast/oat/wheat-heavy Finback NEIPA pour, right down to the chunky, oddly-asymmetrical head and retention. Nice foamy buildup of about 3 fingers that sinks down to a sparse netting, sometimes with better legs at some points than at others, leaving behind islands of sticky lacing that clumps together. Not the most refined of their pours, but it's not bad at all.
Sabro is a "Neomexicanus" variety of hop that has been found growing in the wild in New Mexico and the surrounding area of the US for a million years. Yeah, no joke, these hops are old. This one, a result of breeding a few distinct varietals of Neomexicanus varietals, used to be called HBC 438 and I believe was featured in at least one Sierra Nevada wild hop ale. It boasts unusual notes of coconut and cream, which work distinctly in this beer alongside the bright tropical fruit backbone laid down by 007/Mosaic. I can pick up bright, fleshy papaya, lychee, and gooseberry with some lighter notes of redcurrant, tangerine flesh, and pink lemonade. This smells great, honestly... very bright and fruity, setting itself apart from some of the other Finback IPAs I've had lately. Hopefully it holds up on the palate.
First few sips are resinous and juicy with a balance between pine-driven dankness and stone fruit, tangerine, grapefruit, and papaya. Light notes of tannin-like subtlety and coconut toward the finish, with more of the "creamy," almost oddly-malty/caramel-like flavor of Sabro in the mix. Finishes a touch more bitter and more herbal than expected, but very satisfying overall, with a long swallow and great follow-through of complex hop elements. Feel is a little more lithe than expected for the semi-strong ABV, but carbonation is pushed back a bit in the traditional NEIPA way. Very cool stuff. Would drink again!
