Opaque golden orange with a small white head. Decent retention.

Aroma of mango, candied orange, apricot, grapefruit. Smells a bit sweet and boozy.

Tastes of mango, yellow peach, candied grapefruit and orange. Some honey and bready malt. Sweet and boozy.

Very creamy, thick feel. Moderately carbonated.

An okay NEIPA, I guess. Not that good. Too sweet, too boozy, too thick.

Can from the brewery in Queens during 2020 COVID pause. Pours a hazy golden orange with decent head and lacing, smell is mild orange olive oil cake, melon, and hints of marshmallow and graham cracker, taste is earthy and herbaceous orange blossom, finishes with a bready dough/ graham cracker note and a very mild pithy bitterness, mouthfeel is medium bodied and creamy. Savory citrus fudgesicle vibes.

I'm such a sucker for new Finback IPAs, especially if they use weird hop combos like this one. I will fully admit that I have not had one single IPA with either Belma or Bru-1 that has convinced me whatsoever that these are hops that belong primarily in styles traditionally thought of as "hoppy," though, so this should be an interesting beer. Will my expectations be turned on their proverbial heads, or will I remain committed to being picky as hell about hop varietals like a pretentious pain-in-the-ass? Let's find out together.

Very active pour consisting of a hazy (duh) orange-yellow/golden-ish beer topped off by a massive head measuring four fingers at its highest point. Contents under extreme pressure, it seems like! Nice retention and lacing, too. Probably one of the better looking Finback IPAs I've had over the past month or two, and I've had quite a few.

Alright, I'm interested in what's gonna happen here. Bru-1 and Belma are hops that have unusual characteristics, particularly the fact that they are both spice/stone fruit forward instead of being dank/citrusy/tropical like a lot of more commonly-found varietals in hazy IPAs, etc. The first notes I pick up here are light grassiness, floral elements, a touch of nutmeg/baking spice, apricot, and melon. It's quite reserved, and I feel a little vindicated. I mean, I probably just don't really like these hops, but in my opinion nothing about this jumps out or makes me intrigued as to what's happening below the surface. It just kinda exists. I like the idea of Bru-1 in a "hoppy saison" or Americanized tripel, for example, but nothing particularly great is happening here.

It's similar on the palate... wheaty malt backbone with some light, fluffy, airy notes of strawberry, melon, peppery spice, and light papaya. That's honestly probably the Citra pulling its weight, finally, as there was nothing Citra-like in the nose. Kinda pillowy feel with soft carbonation; almost a bit too passive even for a typically "plush" style. I'm not a huge fan of this one whatsoever, and I kinda knew that I wouldn't be going in, but I like to give stuff a shot even if I might not like it. These hops just feel so estery and unusual, and they lack the crisp and defined character I personally prefer to see coming out of hazy/NEIPA style beers, so yeah. Gonna go easy on it rating-wise because I'm sure people out there will like this one and it seems like it's made well-enough, but no thanks.
