Argh, I must really be losing my touch... I'm not the first reviewer of a new Finback IPA! Granted, I'm a few weeks behind. This one sounds intriguing, but I am unsure how all of these old and new hops combined are gonna feel and jive together. Let's find out.
Appearance: It's alright-looking. Definitely an opaque, almost milky-looking one, topped with an oddly quick-dissipating head. Lace looks nice but legs are mediocre. Smallish bubbles sticking around on the surface. Can't say it stands out.
Scent: I'm getting melon rind and dank pine notes mixed with some grapefruit bubble gum-like esters. I'm not really overly convinced here, honestly. Super estery but doesn't have enough of that edgy Simcoe fun that I enjoy, and Idaho 7 + Zappa feels a bit too leftfield to me. Zappa is a Neomexicanus varietal that elicits notes of "passionfruit, mint, spice, tropical fruits, and fruity pebbles" according to the growers, and I guess I can pick up some of the passion fruit here, but the rest of those things feel underwhelming, and the other hops here don't work super well with it. Kind of a creamy note, as well. Hmm...
Taste: I am feeling middle-of-the-road here, as well. I get some light spice and dankness with some earthy, almost tobacco-like flavors, mingling with pine and some hints of fleshy mango. Weird as hell, and not really in the kind of way that I want. I am not sold here. Feels too, um... randomly assembled?
Mouthfeel: Well, at least this part is right on the money, so that's nice. Very smooth overall, but firm and defined, with a coating slickness and a light hint of bitterness in the finish. It's a satisfying drink and works in some ways, these just are not the flavors I really want. Can still respect it for what it is, but not my thing overall honestly.

A: The beer is very hazy pale whitish yellow in color. It poured with a short white head that quickly settled down, leaving a minuscule ring of bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate aromas of passion fruit and grapefruit are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell but has stronger flavors of grapefruit with hints of pine in the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and somewhat smooth and juicy on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This IPA does a nice job at combining aromas and flavors of citrusy and tropical fruit hops.
Serving type: can
