This beer, as part of the annual, one-off released "Old Bounder" series, is last year's (2004) version. I purchased this bottle straight at the farm-house brewery in the country-side in West Sussex while joining their annual beer walk which coincides with the brewery's winter celebration releasing this strong beer. Had half pint of it along with a pint each of Nyewood Gold and Wassail at just 10:30 am, I was already here and there before the country beer walk~~ but still remembered to talk a bottle of this one-off release with me back home. The BB date is 31 Dec. 06.
A: poured into Kasteel's chalice a dark copperish hue with chill haze, coming with no beer head what-so-ever. The carbonation is very flat too, making the appearance rather static, but expectable.
S: not very intense but floating aroma of crystal and chocolate malts, along with a long lasting aroma of slightly sour, sweet note of preserved plum and/or sweet date jam, with a tinge of wild-honey, caramel, and rock brown sugar. Overall very settled and prevalent malty, but a bit lacklustre.
T: sweetened plum juice and date jam flavour hits the palate first, along with a de...eply sweetish savour of caramel, juicy raisins and mild cinnamon-like spicy touch, leading to a slightly dryish bitter-sweetness at the back; the dryish mouthfeel gradually intensifies as the sweetness softens, and slowly a tinge of warmish alcoholic touch creeps down the throat. Very dry, herbal hoppyness and bitterness at presence in the lingering finish, making the aftertaste extremely enticing and, most remarkably, clean.
M&D: overly smooth, even watery, only salvaged by the slowly evolving structure of maltiness and hops and nice flavour. Overall the yeasts in the bottle have all died out for a long long time and the texture is a bit boring and static. But the body is so attenuated it tastes nothing like a 9.5%abv. strong beer and rather easy to savour. But still this bottle-conditioned version is not quite like the same beer I had on cask last December, which was more lively for sure, although the rich preserved-fruity maltiness is definitely here. Like to go back to Ballard's brewery this year to see if the new version is any more exciting~~
