I have had this on draft at the brewery and it is pretty good...the cans I bought at Harris Teeter I can't say the same about. So..lets stick to the Brewery.
From the brewery it was a very drinkable....if somewhat light...scotch ale. In comparisons to other scotch Ales I have had the opportunity to drink it was a little lacking in body department but it made up for it by staying true to what it should be and ditching the hops. Overall, I can drink more than a few of these.

Heritage Brewing Co. "Kings Mountain Scot-American Ale"
12 fl. oz. can without production coding or freshness dating
$1.67 @ Kroger, Virginia Beach, VA
Notes via stream of consciousness: Scott-American ale? I have no idea what that is. Perhaps it's kind of like a Scottish ale with American hops? We'll see. It pours a clear deep mahogany brown body beneath a creamy head of yellowed off- white. It seems to be holding well. The aroma delivers some dark brown sugar, dark caramel, and grainy almost cereal-like malt but no hops. Very much a Scotch ale so far. No, wait, there's some low level fruitiness to it, and perhaps an edge of roastiness. Hmmm. It's clean, and fairly bright, and welcoming. The flavor is much fuller with a nice toastiness to it, and some clear apple and cherry-like fruitiness. A very subtle roastiness backs it. I'd call it nutty as well; and I get a peanut-skin-like bitterness in the finish with some piney hops, earthiness, and dull roast. It's medium bodied with a dextrinous feel and a moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation that leaves it creamy and smooth. Ah ha, I see now that it was once just labeled as just a "Scotch ale" and I think that fits the bill pretty nicely. There are some hops there but I don't think enough to really warrant calling it a Scot-American ale, but whatever. I think it's nicely done, bready and molasses-ey, but not really "sweet". It's well-balanced, rounded, and polished - and very drinkable. What's the strength on this? 7.4%, I never noticed at all.

Got it on tap at the Hamilton, DC.
Look: dark black with creamy head.
Taste: did not taste like a scotch ale at all. It was quite bland, not that sweet, and little fruitiness. There was strong hop presence, which overpowered other taste. Quite bland aftertaste.
An awful presentation of a scotch ale, even though not necessarily a bad beer in itself, but mediocre. If I want a scotch ale, I'd rather go for an Old Chub.

Kings Mountain ale is pretty good. This was my first foray into the space of "Scotch Ale", and it seems pretty good from this beer.
The color is a sort of rich stouty color. The head as others have mentioned is quite impressive. The flavor is very tasty. It sort of has a satisfying and cloying sweetness, that sort of disappears into a mellowed sweet ale taste that is quite good.
The smell is suggestive of the taste and body, smooth with a temptingly sweet element to it. Very rich taste, especially around the edge of the palate, that sort of dissipates into a sort of "bready" i guess one might call it sort of molassesy sweetness, really tasty.
As I drank this beer, I sort of hoped there was more in the can, it was really tasty and satisfyingly chocolaty or coffee hinted in flavor, especially towards the back of the palate as a sort of aftertaste.
Definitely a tasty beer/ale, a good mix between a coffee/chocolate stout and something like an ale. Very good, and smooth as well.

A: Tons of light tan head, rich dark brown and cloudy.
S: Toffee and caramel, but suspiciously buttery.
T: Similar to the smell with caramel and toffee but with a more pronounced buttery flavor that smacks of diacetyl. Pleasant finish...starts thin then gets stronger.
M: Carbonation is at a decent level and complements the beer; nothing amazing.
O: Has real potential to be a great scotch beer with the malt bill, but needs some tweaking and possible some more stringent equipment cleaning.

Poured from a can into a shaker pint, the beer is a muddled, hazy, opaque, sediment filled, ruby-tinted, caramel coloring with a tall, foamy, dense, bubbly, off-white head. This is what a Scotch Ale should look like. Aromas of rich caramel, sugary sweet, with roasted notes, highlights of thistle and bittering hops, with earthy characteristics and a rich toffee backbone. Flavors are heavily sweet, a blend of toffee and caramel forward, with vanilla highlights, some earthy undertones, roasted highlights, and subtle hops bittering at the end. This turns into a decent malt bomb by the time the rich toffee and caramel aftertaste starts to set in. The body is robust and smooth, but still somewhat light, transitioning to the soft, smooth, tangy sweet finish, with only a slightly cloying feeling.
