Notes: DDH Hazy Double IPA

With something a little different in mind, we composed a grain bill consisting of Pilsner malt, flaked and malted wheat, and just the right amount of flaked oats to really tie this unique Hazy IPA together. With our fruit expressive house yeast getting fermentation in motion, we Double Dry Hopped this beer with an exciting duo of the freshest Calypso and New Zealand wai-Iti hops before adding the perfect amount of juicy Apricot purée.

This DIPA is what we think of as a hazy East coast meets West coast DIPA. Wide World drinks with a lower bitterness and fruit forward approachability of a New England DIPA, but also has the refreshing quality, dryness and drinkability of a west coast DIPA. We pull aromas and flavors of Ripe Apricot, crisp pear, dried pineapple, and subtle pine needle.

My first spin with Wai-iti hops, and my third or perhaps fourth go-round with apricot puree as an add on, none of which ended up well. Trim Tab nailed it with DDH Singularity and Giant Steps. Wide World....not so much.

No legible date stamp; initially released Friday, October 11, 2019.

A nice deep golden pour, hazy but not completely opaque; a frothy head of white carb bubbles its way to the top of the glass, slow to find its way back into the body of the beer.

Initially getting loads of apricot on the nose. With the added puree really complimenting the Wai-iti hops, there's a very clear stone fruit predominance here. Mango and grapefruit emerge as it opens up, giving a very inviting and aromatic introduction.

Wai-iti and Calypso hops are two varieties that are tough to nail, but I really think this was a very well-executed beer. The apricot purée didn't turn the beer into something it shouldn't have been. Rather, it complimented one of the hop varieties very nicely, bringing about a more familiar flavor and aroma profile to one that would have otherwise been mostly characterized by notes of lime, pineapple, and lychee. In addition, the hops really give this noticeable herbaceous quality of mint, unique and something I believe is indicative of Calypso hops.

Mouthfeel is good, a tad filmy bud not in a bad way. Smooth and with a bit of residual stickiness. Drinks really well and continues to go down easier the longer it's in the glass.
