Funk "Oak Aged Farmhouse Porter"
$6 per 14 oz. "pint" @ Quotations, Media, PA
I made a special trip out to find this beer hoping for the best considering that it's oak-aged. Notes: Cloudy mahogany body beneath a tan head. Better than average head retention and lacing. Limited aroma... smells a little green as well.... the wood at least comes through. Also a touch minty. Not much chocolate or dark malt for a porter... more of a dunkel. Fruity yeast. Stiff bitterness. Medium-light mouthfeel and median carbonation. Je na se qua... the intangibles... OK. Dryness from the oak in the finish. To sum up: Appearance... uhh, OK Aroma... uhh, OK Flavor... OK but not full enough in the base beer to bother oak-aging it. Overall it's a decent beer that just doesn't live up to the "specialness" of oak aging. I'll gladly enjoy another one, but I don't want to pay extra for the oak aging because I feel it's wasted here. It's like throwing good money after bad. FUNK, heads up, build a better beer don't just put a Band-Aid (oak aging) on it.
