Notes via stream of consciousness: This is the nitrogen version but I've never had the regular version so I won't know the difference. Before I even pour it let me note that I'm expecting a black body with a glimmer of dark mahogany brown at the base of the glass and a creamy khaki colored head so let's see... the body checks out but the head is a dark tan. I can see via the mahogany edge at the base of the glass that it's hazy. It's chocolatey and cocoaish in the nose with a little bit of roastiness. The taste is quite fruity, mainly displaying apple but also some sweet red berries, and it has a chocolate covered espresso bean character that's really nice. The chocolate is like milk chocolate which is a little different as most stouts tend towards darker chocolate. It's also got a little bit of caramel to it, an edge of toastiness, and a dry, bready quality. It's very easy to drink. I guess that's because there's not a lot of bitterness there, but at the same time it's not sweet. Sweetish, yes, but actually sweet, not so much. It's light bodied and creamy smooth and I can imagine that I'd like this version better than the C02 version but you never know. I think this might make a great holiday beer with just a hint of cinnamon and vanilla added. Personally I'm a fan of lighter bodied English-style beers (milds, bitters, etc.) so this works for me but I think that some will find it lacking. It's a little bit strong to be a session ale at 4.7% ABV but that's how I'm looking at it.
