Brewery 85

 

I've given this place many tries before rating but it's always been consistent...

Vibe: This place has a real lack of character...it's a big metal building in and out, with little cohesion and very little identity beyond that. There's no attempt at a theme or uniformity in anything and it ends up feeling like a messy frat house in the long run. The staff is rarely friendly and makes you feel less than welcome to be there.

Quality: The beer is awful...boring, nondescript, barely on style and sometimes unfinishable. For example, there's no hoppiness in the aroma, flavor or feel of their hoppy beers. Compared to other Greenville breweries, their beer is below par...but compared to top national breweries, 85 is way below par.

Service: The beer is bad, but the service tends to be worse. Pissed off employees that act like it's putting them out to help you is the norm. They will stand around doing nothing (trying to look busy) while there is a line for beer. The 2 ladies behind the counter today seemed very standoffish and it was very difficult to order because of their drama and terrible attitude. If I were the owner, the staff would be held to a higher standard of behavior, etiquette and dress.

Selection: From the styles listed on the board, there was somewhat of a selection...but after trying them and seeing how off style the entire brewery was, there was very little selection available. Many of the lighter beers taste extremely similar, despite being listed as drastically different styles. Besides that, only 3 other styles on tap.

If you're in Greenville, skip 85 and go drink good beer at just about any other brewery.

Visited on a hot and humid early Sunday afternoon. Only a few customers. There is plenty of room in the tap room, but they do not have air conditioning, so a bit uncomfortable on a hot day. Beer selection is very good and beer quality is quite good.
