Inspired by the fiery, red-headed pirate Anne Bonny, this hazy and slighty-orange colored IPA features Cryogenically processed Loral and Cascade hops and Columbus hops. You’ll find bold citrus notes that finish smooth and dry on the palate.

Anne Bonny was born in Ireland and moved to England at a young age and, then to what is now North Carolina where she owned and ran a tavern with her husband. One day, Pirate Calico Jack visited the tavern, and soon after, Bonny left her husband and took up piracy with Calico Jack. She was a bold woman of the times, much like this double IPA.

Symbolism abounds in this beer. Irish, English and American malts were used to represent Bonny. Cascade, Loral and Columbus (CA L CO) hops represent Calico Jack. A female pirate was an uncommon occurrence, much like being a female brewery owner in modern times. Ellen Joyner, one of Bombshell’s 3 female owners is also an alum of East Carolina University, whose mascot is coincidently a pirate!

Malts: Irish Base malt, English Base malt, American Base malt

Hops: Columbus, Cryo Cascade, Cryo Loral

Look: It pours light amber with an off white head. Head retention is very good.

Smell: It has a malty backbone that is quite noticeable in the first parts of the aroma with caramel. It has a bit of spice in the nose and background light notes of stone fruit.

Taste: It has a combination of caramel, stone fruit, and spice in the flavors that are rather well balanced. The alcohol is noticeable in the flavors as well.

Fell: It has a medium body with smooth alcohol warming.

Overall, it is a drinkable imperial ipa with a good balance of flavors.

Not retired and now at 8.6% ABV.Pours into a stemmed glass a deep slightly hazed burnt orange with a one finger slightly off white head atop.A mix of tropical fruits and light pine in the nose, some sweet sugary notes from the alcohol comes into play as it starts to warm.Big malty sweetness up front on the palate with alot of caramel, almost cakey in the flavor and feel.Slightly boozy with some citric hops with a bit of rind in the finish.Big sweetness it seems like a bigger beer than it is,a typical malt forward DIPA.

A: Pours an almost opaque yet still clear dark copper in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass and moderate burnt orange + ruby red colored highlights. The beer has a two finger tall foamy light beige head that reduces to a couple of small patches of thin film surrounded by a large patch of very thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of biscuit, caramel, and toasted malts with a hint of sweetness as well as a just shy of moderate aromas of pine/resinous, herbal, and earthy hops with a hint of citrus/grapefruit pith hops.

T: Upfront there is a slightly stronger than moderate flavor of biscuit, caramel, and toasted malts with a light amount of caramel sweetness. That is followed by just shy of moderate flavors of pine/resinous, herbal, and earthy hops with a hint of citrus/grapefruit pith hops which impart a light amount of bitterness which lingers for awhile.

M: Slightly heavier than medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Light hints of dryness in the finish.

O: Drinks fairly easily but this is a very malt heavy DIPA even though it does not have a lot of sweetness. Alcohol is well hidden.
