from a quality standpoint, this is a real well made beer, i just personally am not wild about it. its dark for the style, almost more of a brown ale than the copper colored takes on this style i am used to, and its got a real assertive hoppy finish, bitter for a malt driven beer, and i think its a bit too much. so while i admire the execution (which is true of all freehouse beers for the most part), i am not in love with the recipe, but thats personal preference. some cocoa notes in here, a deeper and darker malt profile than i normally look for in these, and still with some grain sweetness too. its weighty on the feel, somewhat undercarbonated, and overall just a little bit all over the map. i like the yeast making this fairly crisp for what it is, and i enjoy the flavor of the hops, just not all the bitterness. notes of toasted chestnut, baked bread, and bitter earth at the end. quite autumnal, i might like it better in the fall than in the summer. bold take on the style, well made but dense.
