500 ml bottle of Celtic Black Ale in Scotland. 3.9% ABV.
Near black body with a short weak head.
Mild simple aroma of dark malts. The flavor follows. Mildly bitter.
Overall: weak, disappointing black ale.

Having enjoyed the bottled version on several occasions, I noticed this was a guest ale in the local branch of the British Legion. I normally preffer cask ales, but this was a disapointment.
The beer poured very well, a nice dark colour with a good head that maintained throughout the duration of the pint. The aromas were OK, but they were a lot sweeter than the bottled version, malts and caramel dominated with a faint hint chocolate and coffee.
This was a good start but from here it goes down hill. The balance that was evident in the bottled version is completely lost to a very sweet pint, too sweet. The mouthfeel was OK, a nice smooth, medium bodied ale, but the aftertaste was lost to the sweetness of the beer.
The beer is recommended in bottled form, however this cask version, to me, is a totally different beer.

Half pint sampled at the Belfast Beer Festival, 17th November 2006
Poured a deep dark red / brown colour... Poured with no real head at all... faint carbonation... no lacing...
Aroma - Light dark fruits (blackcurrents, light raisins), some winey notes, watery black coffee, very light caramel sweetness, quite strong and bitter roasted malts, faint peppery hops...
Taste Definite watery black coffee notes, some faint blackcurrent fruitiness, roasted (maybe burnt?) malts, some light choocolate hints, some spicy hops, no real sweetness...
Feel - Quite smooth.... Medium bodied... Just too bland and boring to be drinkable...
Overall - A very bland and listless porter - all the flavours and aromas just need turned up a notch on this one... not really recommended...
