Very dark brown almost black in color with two and a half fingers of dark brown colored, thick foamy head that has disappointingly little retention leaving thin runny lace. Pretty light aroma, chocolate malt with ghostly hints of grape? Or maybe cherry, kinda getting a black forest cake vibe from it.

Less rich tasting and malty then I expected with a very faint sweetness and dark chocolate pudding powder and coffee flavor to it.

Very lightly bitter cocoa back-end with a faint slightly sourish finish with a hint of acrid sour coffee and cherry or cassis flavor on the aftertaste.

Medium bodied with a higher carbonation to it then I'd like or expect. Kinda a bit meh, was expecting a bit more chocolate and more body, odd sourish note's that may or may not have come from storing it a bit too long on the shelf.

A- This one pours with a fizzy yet retentive caramel colored head, which does eventually settle to a ring around the glass. The coloration of the brew is a dark cola/coffee brown

S- Creamy coffee aromas, semi-sweet chocolate, dark chocolate and/or burnt malt toastiness. Earthy bitterness, slightly nutty and it becomes stronger as it warms. The finish is slightly dry, hop bittered and lingering on the nostrils.....so far so good!!

T- Oh the flavors follow suit rather well, with the coffee becoming more black rather than creamy, and the chocolate leaning more towards dark than milk/semi-sweet. New flavors are burnt malts, roasted cashew creaminess, yeast, biscuit and bread round out the flavor with the finish being smooth, semi sweet and it lingers somewhat on the palate.

M/O- Creamy carbonation, velvety texture and a medium body lend themselves to this highly drinkable porter! Alcohol is well hidden for 7% and theres a nice dessert like quality to this one....I have had chocolate porters with a stronger flavor profile but overall this one has all of the checkpoints ticked off! A decent Ale and I recommend!

4 Mile Double Chocolate Porter

Near pitch black with a creamy mocha head. Settles into ring around the glass.

Aroma of bitter cocoa, dark roast coffee and hint of sweet chocolate syrup.

Flavor is deep roast bitter coffee, bittersweet baking cocoa, hint of sweet mocha smooths it out.

Moderate carbonation and a slight syrupy feel to the above medium body.

Was thinking sweet from the label, but this had a few roasty and bitter layers in there as well.

650ml bomber poured into tulip 21/2/17

A almost black with a deep edge, finger of noisy foam falls in no time leaving no lace

S ashy, cocoa powder, burnt herbs, cold coffee, and earthy notes

T a little booze and licorice come out but still has that ashy, burnt taste that's holding it back

M lighter then expected, frothy from the bubbles, gritty inside, burnt finish

O OK but nothing special, flavors can't shine through all the burnt malt

Not a whole lot of chocolate in this one, nothings wrong with this one but a few tweaks might work in its favor

650ml bottle - so, after reading the sort of poetic tasting notes on the label, I'm to take it that there animal pirate is a mink?

This beer pours a rather solid black, with subtle red-cola basal edges, and two fingers of puffy, finely foamy, and yet fizzy brown head, which leaves a bit of low-lying, distant mountain range lace around the glass as it quickly blows off.

It smells of well-roasted caramel malt, more bitter than sweet chocolate, cafe-au-lait, a further free-range ashiness, and some plain leafy, weedy, and dead floral green hop bitters. The taste is semi-sweet cocoa powder, gritty and grainy caramel malt, wet char, an understated raw coffee bean acridity, spoiled milk, a hint of oily bar-top nuttiness, and more weak leafy, earthy, and musty floral verdant hoppiness.

The carbonation is fairly tame in its shy-seeming frothiness, the body a so-so medium weight, and sort of smooth, with that overarching dry acridity (I won't assign blame just yet) taking things down a notch here. It finishes off-dry, the underwhelming cocoa and roasted malt tangoing like spurned lovers might.

Overall, there appears to be a discord here between promise and expectation - I expected a lot of chocolate and a lot of booze for this one, and got very little, if any of each (so, um, good job for the latter, I guess). The roasted (malt, coffee, cream, hop, you name it) character dominates, which gets a little tiresome after a spell.

Not too sweet, wonderful balance and a nice depth to the flavour.
