A dark, strong doppelbock lager, Winterbock’s rich malt flavors of chocolate and coffee with hints of molasses come from double decoction mashing with 100% imported German Munich and Pilsner malts. Its mild bitterness comes from 100% imported German Perle hops from Bavaria’s famous Hallertau Valley hop-growing region, while its clean, satisfyingly smooth finish comes from six weeks of cold lagering with pure lager yeast from Andechs, a Bavarian monastery brewery.

Semi-opaque chestnut brown body with a tan head and blobs of lacing. Dark fruit leading, caramel malt, and toast supporting for the aromas. Taste starts with dark fruit and malt but finish has tobacco and slight metal, sigh was going so well. Feel is malty all the way, metal twinge is felt in the finish though, detracting from the malt bomb nature

This brew is a bargain that compares favorably with expensive Belgian ales. One of my favorites is Delirium Nocturnum and this delicious local ( for me) concoction is a fraction of the price and just as good. They call it a doppelbock but it it seems more like a quad to me. You might say it’s like a cross between an Ayinger Celebrator and a Trappistes Rochefort 8. Delicious!

12oz bottle from Tavour. Dark brown pour, head disappears right away. Malty aroma, sweet, nutty. Taste is pretty sweet, raisins, malty, tobacco, nutty. Sweetness can be a little cloying. Dry, mouth coating.

Poured into a Celebrator pokal. Pours a dark reddish brown with a fine, one finger light khaki head with great retention and solid lacing. Looks nice. Aroma of biscuit malt, brown bread, figs and hints of dried plums. Flavor follows, with dry biscuit malt, brown bread, molasses, dates, a little plum and malted milk balls. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. A very nice domestic doppelbock that adheres closely to the traditional malt body with good dark fruit and bready notes. There is a bare hint of winter spicing, but not much to suggest a winter version. Not a problem, because this is an excellent doppelbock for any season. Nicely done.

Agree completely with the review by HopTheology, got a sixer of 12oz bottles in Leavenworth with no date code.
It's a fantastic Winter Bock, I would snap it up if it gets to California(though I've never seen it here)... sigh.

When you have to use Google half the time to find a beer in BeerAdvocate's database, you know the website has a problem.
Picked this one up at a Kansas City gas station for $1.79. I don't know the date because it's not printed, but I do see it's a hefty 8.25% ABV. Serving this in a Goose Island Nonic Pint.
It pours a ruddy chestnut color with a creamy egg foam yellow finger of head. The head diminishes to a thin wispy ring with bubbles within a few minutes.
The aroma is really fruity right off the bat, in fact I'm getting some frozen strawberries and a little bit of rhubarb. Behind that are the classic markers - a bit of smokiness, prune, wheat kernel, and more frozen strawberry.
Flavor is massive. I did not expect this. A total wall of dark dried fruits and tobacco with the brightness of orange peel and fruit cocktail. The yeast flavors are tremendous in this, something that most Doppelbocks dream of. Wheat and barley can be sampled underneath. A finish of liquored up figs and wheat kernel.
Feel is slick and slightly roasty, with a moderate level of gravelly carbonation, a little heat but not too much, and a sticky finish.
Overall, I was blown away by how good this is. This is a hell of a doppelbock and a great winter beer. I figured it'd be a nice sampler beer but nothing I'd come back to - but this is quite the contrary. I'll pick it up next time I see it again.
Price paid : $1.79 / bottle
Would buy again : hell yes

Pours a very effervescent Auburn with 2+ fingers of tan head.
S: Brown bread, a little dark fruit
T: Follows the nose, a little fig, some caramel & leafy hop notes up front, some booze bite. Figs, leafy hops, dryness & a little boozeyness once warm. Finishes with woody dryness, leafy hops & a little figgyness
MF: Medium body, fairly assertive carbonation
A solid dopple, pretty drinkable

Look - dark amber reddish hue, fluffy off white head reduced to nice cap thu out. Lacing is spotty and slick. Great looking beer.
Smell - caramelized burnt sugars, dark fruits, spice, malty
Taste - sweet, malty, molasses, little spice. Breaded malts give way to a sticky mouthfeel of toffee and candied fruits.
Feel - medium to thin, sticky mouthfeel
Overall - a great winter warmer, zero abv warming at 8%. Great for the winter months.

Thanks to Harrison8 for this one, from the Secret Santa mini-BIF. 12oz bottle poured into 14oz teku. Poured a dark brown color with just the barest hint of translucence, and a very thin cap of tan head that immediately dissipated and left no lace.
The aroma was fairly typical, sweet malts, a touch of caramel, and a slight alcohol note. Pretty similar on the tongue, just a bit sweeter than the aroma, and slight touch of spice at the back end.
The body was a touch thin for the style, and had a semi-sweet finish. Drinkability was very good, the beer went down smooth and easy. Overall, a solid version of the style, worth a shot if you see it.
