Heim Beer is brewed by KC Bier Co. for J. Rieger & Co. Distillery, which opened a new distillery in 2019 in the East Bottoms district of Kansas City, MO. The new distillery was constructed in the former location of the Heim Brewery, a Pre-Prohibition Austrian brewery that was the largest in Kansas City at its peak.
As a tribute to the Heim Brewery, KC Bier Co. brewed a modern-day recreation of the style of bier the Heim Brewery would have made during its heyday, for J. Rieger & Co. to serve at its distillery.
This Bohemian-Style Export Lager made through decoction mashing with 100% imported German Pilsner malt and bittering with imported Saaz hops. It is cold-conditioned and naturally carbonated through a four-week lagering period with Bohemian lager yeast.
Heim Beer is a sessionable pale lager with biscuit and honey malt flavors, slightly more bitterness with spicier hop character than a Munich-Style Helles Lager, and a crisp, clean finish.

The is pours a little lighter than I anticipated. Head is light and quickly fades.
Smell is malty, but the malt is more subdued than in some other beers in this genre. I pick more herbal/grapefruit aroma than I expected.
Mouthfeel is light, and the finish is more watery than I like.
Taste is the best part of this beer. The malt is light but dominant. The hops’ bitterness is ever present but shines in the aftertaste, where it lingers in a tug-of-war with the malt.
This is not a beer I would buy again, even if it were not a now-retired limited run. It is not bad, but KC Bier has too many beers I like better.

12oz bottle from the brewery. Poured out a clear, golden yellow color with a small, white head of foam. It left minimal lacing on the glass. It smelled of toasted bread, floral notes and sweet caramel. Sweet caramel and toffee taste with a sharp bitterness.
