Alt in German means “old,” in reference to the older tradition of brewing with top fermenting yeast. Like their neighbors to the south in Köln, who are known for brewing Kölsch, a crisp golden ale, Altbier brewers in Düsseldorf produce their darker ale with cool fermentation temperatures and long, cold conditioning times to mellow their brews.
This medium-bodied, reddish-brown ale has a light toasted malt aroma with a clean, smooth finish, and is perfect for the crisp fall days rolling in. If you’ve never visited Düsseldorf and drank an Altbier, then you’ve never had an Altbier the way it was intended to be consumed. This is your chance to get a very close idea what the bier tastes like at the brewery in Germany.

Pours a foggy, lightly-murky brown with a finger of khaki foam. Head retention is good, with thick lacing left behind. Aroma is biscuity, bready, nutty malts that bring about a splash of sweetness. Flavor profile is nutty, biscuity, earthy (light), and biscuity malts. It's lightly sweet throughout until a semi-bitter finish. Mouth feel is medium with a prickly carbonation, especially at the end. Overall, smooth with a light bite, and yet it drinks crisp and refreshing.
