Dortmunder is a smooth golden export lager with more alcohol than a German Pilsner or Helles, but less than a Bock. Historically, the term “export” referred to the higher-alcohol content to enhance the flavor stability for beer shipped to distant markets. We fermented our Dortmunder with a special, highly-attenuating yeast to produce a rich malt body, yet preserve a refreshing, dry finish and soft hop character.

Yellow in color with excellent clarity. There’s a fingernail of dishwater white on top. The aroma is of faint grassy hops and lightly salty lager yeast. I’m tasting lightly salted sourdough pretzels. The mouth is very easygoing and quaffable.

Appearance: Pours a light, clear, golden color with a strong white head. SRM of 7.
Aroma: Strong bready aromas of pale malt, grains, yeast. Yeasty with a light honey sweetness underneath.
Flavor: Flavors of pale malts, grains, a light honey sweetness underneath.
Feel: Medium-bodied, strong carbonation. Yeasty and finishes lightly sweet.
Compared to Lupulin Dortmunder 10/2022: Pours slightly lighter, stronger aromas. More sweet bread and honey. Less dry grains. Slightly sweeter. Winner: KC Bier
Compared to Great Lakes Dortmunder Gold 10/2022: Pours lighter, milder aromas. More pale malts, grains, yeast. Less smooth honey and flower.
Overall: A nice representation of the style. One of my favorite styles. This one captures the bready, yeasty, while also getting some light honey sweetness of the end. Well-rounded. Flavorful. A great representation of the style. (Rating: within the style 4.00, but overall may be higher)

L: deep golden yellow with nice tight head recedes quickly
S: malts and floral noble hops
T: bready with a hint of malt sweetness before herbal/floral hop notes kick in and dominate.
F: soft carbonation and full heavy mouth feel that has a dry finish
O: A solid balanced lager. The hops note is a little heavy for me but still enjoyable. If you like lagers with European hop profile give it a try. I find it an average but respectable lager.

12oz bottle. Poured out a clear, golden amber color with a small, off-white head of foam. It left sudsy trails of lace on the glass. It smelled of caramel, bread crust and some floral notes. Sweet caramel taste with some toffee and a light bitterness.

Poured from a bottle. Straw in color with almost no head. Smells of bread, malt and slight fruit hints. Flavor is dull malt bread with an earthy bitter finish. Not much to get excited about here.
