As the playful nature of brewers are introduced to newer, more exotic and often locally sourced hops, the allure to get experimental is just too great to ignore. The Insane Wonderer series of Columbus takes a stop at Cashmere, Mosiac and Citra hops for their second installment.
Glowing golden and with a slight hazy diffusion, Volume II releases a creamy white froth ahead of a medley of aromas that swirl with citrus, tropical fruit and nuances of apple and pear. Its sweet counterpart greets the tongue with faint caramel, honey and the savoriness of lightly toasted granola.
But with the hops sliding quickly into a supporting role, the hops glide over the middle palate with a rip roaring citrus zing. Tangerine, lemon and white grapefruit offer a certain citronella character before the under ripened flavors of passionfruit and mangos introduce an exotic taste in complement. Pear and apple barely get going before the bitter grip of hops set into the throat with the character of hay, pine needles and orange peels.
Medium bodied and trending dry, the beer's taste retains a malt balance that's shy of the west coast mentality. Still, its peppery bite and mild hop derived astringency leaves an earthy taste of grassiness, leaf and stem unsettled heading into aftertaste

L: Golden color with a good amount of white head that last for awhile. Good lacing that sticks for awhile.
S: Tropical fruits up front followed by a nice earthy pine scent and a slight smell of hops.
T: This is a nice hop forward beer with tropical fruit notes throughout and light bitterness from the hops.
F: Medium to soft bodied with a slightly dry finish.
O: Really solid IPA here, would definitely drink again.

Description: Dark gold, almost copper appearance and slightly hazy. White head and lacing stick to the side of the glass. Smell is pine and dank along with some mild fruits, melon, green pepper, a bit of orange and some underlying citrus. Taste is similar, in that the beer's dank, musty qualities predominate with some lighter notes of citrus, melon and pine. Maybe not as complex as the smell, but still really nice. Kind of reminds me of a red IPA. Feel is medium and "wet", where the taste lingers on the palate. Medium carbonation.
Overall: 4.25 (This beer is good and I would likely drink it again) This was quite good, on the cusp of being great. IMO, it is better than Insane Wanderer Vol. 1, which was no slouch. The depth of flavor and complexity are done very well, and nothing gets muddled. One to try to if you get the chance.

12 FLUID OZ bottle
Served in an IPA glass
This beer pours amber with golden highlights and a slight haze. It is topped with several inches of beige head that leaves some nice lacing rings as I consume.
It has a medicinal and dank aroma.
The taste is pretty much the same. It starts out medicinal. then it gives way to a dank, bitter taste.
Medium mouthfeel
I liked Vol. 1 better. This was pretty good, but Vol. 1 was very good.

Volume 1 was arguably the best IPA I've ever had. This, while still very, very, very good trails it somewhat.
Volume 2 brings a little more pine than volume 1.

Bottle dated 8/2/18. CBF tulip.
A: brassy crystal clear copper with just under one finger beige head and lively carbonation.
S: Mosaic! Loads of tightly-wound, bright citric tropical character; key lime, mango, pineapple. There is a thread of honeyed sweetness running throughout. Not kidding, my mouth is watering at the smell.
T: does not disappoint. Not nearly as sweet on the palate as the smell would indicate, but there is an initial sweetness that dissipates through the taste. Arrives bright, hoppy, fruity, herbal, floral, mildly sweet. Mid palate transitions to more sweetness, mango, citrus peel, then an herbal and floral, lingering hoppy finish.
M: not nearly as carbonated as the appearance suggests. Lighter end of mid weight.
O: it seems a little lighter in body and as for hops even more “new wave” hoppy than Vol. 1, which was pretty new school on its own. This seems less sweet, “tighter” if that is a flavor; a “high” bitter, not a “low” bitter; a “bright” dankness, not a “dark, deep” dankness if that makes sense. I kind of preferred Vol. 1, but what an adventure! Worth trying!
