Dorset Brewing Co. "Vanilla & Bourbon Portland Porter"
cask via handpump @ the Ship & Mitre, Liverpool, UK
Notes: Crystal clear clarity. Dark mahogany brown body with ruby highlights. Frothy yellowed off-white head. Aroma: Roast, toffee/nutty, Bourbon, apple - no hops. Flavor: golden caramel, dark caramel, baker's chocolate, roastiness, Bourbon, apple & pear, vanilla. Firm bitterness. Soft, lingering finish. Light-medium in body and very smooth with a moderate carbonation (cask via hand-pump). Overall: Bourbon comes through in the aroma but the vanilla is masked. Both come through in the flavor with the Bourbon making the better of the appearance as limited vanilla is mainly found in the finish with some floral hops. Very easy to drink, yet satisfying porter that has beautiful accents. It would have been east to overdo this, but they've kept it in check and that's what makes it work. Sometimes less is more.
