Look: Murky orange with substantial white head.
Smell: Sweet marmalade and peach and apricot.
Taste: Mild bitterness with apricot and some pine. Orange peel and pith.
Feel: A little under carbonated but still good. Sweet and sticky.
Overall: Good, better than the average IPA. The alcohol content is hidden under layers of hops.

CAN: purchased at a Whole Paycheck in New York City as part of a 4 pack for $16.99 USD. They advertise this as a Whole Paycheck exclusive beer. Trippy blue-green label art. 16 fl oz format. Standard pull-tab. No best before date/bottled on date.

"Double India Pale Ale" hopped with "loads of late hop editions [sic] an a double dry hopping of superstars Equinox, Citra and Mosaic. Pale malts and flaked wheat round out this wildly expressive East Coast Style IPA." As if their alternate references to this as both a Double India Pale Ale and IPA weren't eye-raising enough, the label curiously recommends stemware as the correct glassware. Hmm.

8% ABV. Served cold into stemware.

APPEARANCE: A dull unfiltered body and a frothy off-white head give this a look consistent with those who hide behind the "East coast style" categorization...which increasingly seems to be code for "we didn't filter this and it looks like crap so we'll just chalk it up to a regional variation." In spite of its murky unsightly body, which is about as far removed as you can get from the clean vibrant copper typically observed in most great expressions of the Imperial IPA style, it's not unattractive, with a head that resists the 8% ABV to achieve a good 8 minute retention, leaving spots of lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes. Not as soft, creamy, or frothy as would be ideal, but passably so.

Appears well-carbonated. I've seen worse, but make no mistake - it's not much to look at.

AROMA: Some muted citrus alongside some pale malts. Not juicy or vivid citrus, more a stale orange juice aroma. I get a blip of Mosaic's signature blueberry but it's barely there at all. Not as oily or resinous as I'd expect of an Equinox hopped beer. It does seem soft and coating, with a bit of an oily feel - to its credit. But the reticence of the Mosaic and Citra is disappointing. Nevertheless, it's generally appealing and does seem well-balanced. I'm not sure the flaked wheat is doing much for it aside from reducing its body and malt presence.

Aromatic intensity is average. I find no off-notes or overt booze. No overt yeasty notes (to style).

TASTE & TEXTURE: Coating and soft indeed, with a resinous oily feel that works well for it, though the trade-off is it that it lacks the clean juicy feel that would best accentuate the Citra as a result. A bit pulpy in terms of its murky indistinct citrus flavour; I'd say it's closest to orange juice that's gone off instead of redolent of fresh orange peel, biting grapefruit, tangerine, or the like. Mosaic is similarly muted and poorly showcased, barely offering any of its signature blueberry character but imparting a bit of a vague tropical fruit vibe I suppose.

Well-carbonated, with a smooth wet texture and a medium body. Definitely as coating as an (I)IPA can be.

Equinox drowns out the Mosaic and Citra, but those who love Equinox will enjoy this beer nevertheless, with its oiliness and resins coming through nicely even if the beer lacks the hop pungency and expressiveness found in the best examples of the style. Papaya. Some melon.

There's not an ideal harmony of texture and taste, nor does this mouthfeel accentuate specific flavours from the flavour profile or elevate the beer as a whole. I do like it for what it is, but it's a far cry from paragons of the style, let alone local competition in this category from the likes of Grimm Artisan Ales, Interboro, and possibly Other Half. Balanced enough with an adequate pale malt backbone, but again I'm not seeing what purpose wheat is serving in this build.

OVERALL: Drinkable, though not as much so as other hoppy beers around this ABV like Ballast Point's Sculpin or Lagunitas' myriad superior offerings. $4+ a can is steep, even by New York standards, and while I'll enjoy polishing off the 4-pack I nabbed I can't see myself buying another. I'll try other Greenpoint beers going forward, but this isn't on the level it needs to be to really compete with other NYC breweries doing the same kind of imperial IPA better.

Description: Pale gold and hazy with little to no head; has a very East Coast look. Big, tropical burst on the nose with grapefruit, mango and dankness followed by a little bit of pine. Taste follows the nose pretty closely with sweet, fruity, juicy notes followed by a bitter finish. Feel is smooth, low carbonation with a little more body than a normal IPA.

Suggested food pairing: Beef

Description: 4.25 (This beer is good and I would likely have it again) I got this as a trade extra and knew nothing about the beer or brewery; it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. Nicely balanced with all the flavors and characteristics you would expect from a classic East Coast IPA. This might be a newer brewery with a low profile, but if they keep turning out beers like this that won't last for long.

Traded for this a while ago, even though this place is very close to where I work in New York City. Love the design of the can with what appeared to be wind patterns over the Atlantic but I wish that there was a date on the bottom that would indicate when this was canned. Regardless of that, this was a solid beer in line with the newer offerings that have been released by Finback, Interboro, and LIC Brewing in recent months!

This had a good pour to it as the beer was apricot in hue with a nice haze, good head, and a moderate amount of lacing left behind. Lots of tropical fruits, pine, and nectar in the nose with more of those to be found in the taste. Though I let this sit for a bit too long, there were some more floaties in here than I would have liked to have seen, though it didn't detract from the taste of this at all. A moderate amount of bready malt, fruit pith and rind coupled with a good dose of resin in the mouthfeel ensured that this beer would be tasty, full, and have just enough nuance to stand out a bit from the pack of newer offerings that were similar in many ways.

The booze was on-target as well given that it was strong enough to be felt at the end but not a deterrent from the nice range of flavors found here. While not outstanding, this was solid and enjoyable and has me wondering what else is currently offered from Greenpoint. Looks like I need to get over there before a shift in the not-too-distant future!
