Picked this up a while ago and finally got around to it tonight, along with the other Greenpoint beers that I've had in my basement stash. As always, I loved the can but the description on it but the presence of the Ella hop (a first for me) was not enough to overcome the apparent lack of Galaxy and Mosaic that I was hoping for in this...

Not a bad pour to this as this beer had a muted goldenrod hue with plenty of basic head. Only one ring of thin lacing was left behind as I worked my way through this. as this was thinner than I would have liked. Moderate blue and raspberry was on the nose with some yeast thrown in as well. Quite juicy, it was hard to discern any hop presence in the nose as this felt like juice that had gone slightly funky over time. No tropical fruit could be tasted in this and with the sediment that was visible in the liquid (mostly my fault), it was one of those things where this beer was a misnomer, more than anything else. Light carbonation and even lighter malt didn't contribute to a favorable impression as it just mindlessly went down the hatch...

Heck, even the alcohol didn't even feel like it was there. Sure, it was but I couldn't' feel it and I was hoping for some given the lack of heft in this. A slightly skunky feel of weed came over me once I finished this off, but that's now I wanted to be taken into outer space. Sure, this would have been better had I had it fresh but not by enough to offset the lack of flavors that this needed. A slick berry juice coated my palate long after I finished this, which was the only redeeming aspect of this beer. At least this wasn't my last of the night...

Poured from an undated can. The beer pours a hazy orange color with a tall, white, fluffy head that stuck around for a while before leaving a nice, thick lacing on the glass.

The smell is very citrus with orange dominating along with some pineapple. There is a definite malt backbone on the nose.

The taste is surprisingly lacking in depth, given the smell. The citrus is muted and it just comes across as a lot of hop bitterness without a lot of flavor. There is a lingering taste like I just chewed an aspirin.

The mouthfeel is thick like juice with low carbonation.

Overall this is not a great IPA. I expected more after the smell. The aftertaste is not good. The look and smell keep the score up a bit.

Nabbed a 4-pack of 16 fl oz cans at a Whole Paycheck in NYC for $17.00.

"India pale ale." Brewed with Mosaic, Galaxy, and (St)Ella hops.

APPEARANCE: Obviously unfiltered given its haziness and opacity. Pulpy lemon in colour, with a soft off-white cap of ~5-6cm height sitting atop. Head retention is good - ~7+ minutes.

Appears well-carbonated.

AROMA: Citrus pulp, pale malt, floral hop aromatics, vague tropical fruit. No blueberry from the Mosaic, unfortunately. Plenty of ale yeast esters.

Aromatic intensity is average. Suggest an IPA devoid of bitterness. Has that unfiltered juice-like vibe common to many examples of the style (what the kids are calling "East Coast style" I suppose).

No off-notes or overt booziness is detectable.

TASTE: Citrus pulp dominates, hitting on heavy orange juice flavours along with floral hop flavour and pale malts. I wouldn't be surprised if some wheat malt was used in this as well.

No blueberry from the Mosaic, nor any other berry (as is promised on the label). Citrusy but not all that tropical, really - not what I expected in a Mosaic and Galaxy hopped IPA. There's very little bitterness, and hop pungency is lackluster. Depth of flavour is poor; no notes are vivid or expressive (even the dominant pulp flavour feels muted).

Not imbalanced, but it does need dialing in. Reticent and shallow.

TEXTURE: Pulpy and moderately thick, with a lumpy hefty presence on the palate. Too heavy and full-bodied; in a juicy IPA like this one, a light refreshing mouthfeel is best. Overcarbonated.

Not oily, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, or rough.

OVERALL: An IPA for the orange juice drinker, Interstellar is further evidence this whole unfiltered IPA fad may have jumped the shark. This may please those who despise bitterness in IPAs, but that comes at a cost of also lacking hop pungency. At $4.25 per can, this won't be getting a second purchase from me (especially when superior expressions of the style normally considered expensive - like Ballast Point's Sculpin - are still cheaper). I'd advise others to steer clear of this one. The IPA market is so oversaturated that mediocrity like this just isn't justifiable.
