i still dont see a category here on BA for american kettle sour types, so instead of calling it a wild beer, which this isnt, i listed it as a stout, which it still is, albeit a sour one. this was a really fun and tasty beer, sour stout has taken me a long time to get into, but i really dig this a lot. its not overly sour, and its fermented in bourbon barrels, which gives it a mellowing woody richness and a wintery sort of sweetness from the whiskey, as well as a highly compatible vanilla note, so nice with these berries, that alone would make this amazing, i would love to try the exact same beer, not sour, but i like it being sour too. moderate acidity and some gritty sort of tannic tartness and astringency from the chokeberries, right there with the jammy dense blackberries, really delicious, lots of fruit coming through the dark grain base. not too much body or bitter roast to this, more of a cocoa and dark chocolate complexion to the grain, makes it a little more drinkable and lets some barrel char come out. a nice tang, a mouthwatering fruitiness, subtle licorice and tobacco and warming cocoa, a little leather and earth too, vanilla but no sweetness, and a wonderful unification of interesting fruit, grains, and barrel along with the sourness. really flavorful and fun beer, they did an awesome job with this, very holiday to me.
