500 ml bottle, from Tesco Express, Belfast. ABV 4.7%. Hops are Galaxy and Brewer’s Gold. Golden colour, moderate white head. Somewhat better aroma than the other two Hilden beers I had, but still not good - again notes of stale broth, but also hints of citrussy and spicy hops. The flavour has citrussy notes, but also hints of vinegar and wood, which may or may not be caused by an infection.

500 ml bottle served cold into a tulip. Purchased while vacationing in Ireland.

Appearance - A rich and clear golden / pale orange color. Topped with and impressive finger and a half of frothy white head. Very good if not great retention and some spidery lacing is the remnants of the head. Not a tremendous amount visible carbonation.

Smell - Certainly English with that restrained yet hoppy smell that isn't quite full blown citrus. Some pine and mango with plenty of malt body in the nose as well.

Taste - Middling bitterness, some orange or grapefruit pith, earthy and plenty of graininess too. Some pineapple sweetness too likely from the Galaxy hops. The hop flavors are a little too restrained though given the nose and it's also not the healthy malt dose that many English Pale Ales are either. A little muddled, but pretty good nonetheless.

Mouthfeel - Very dry, lower than average carbonation and body is medium-light.

Overall - An enjoyable if slightly confused English Pale Ale, that's worthy of it's purchase price. I wouldn't be adverse to having another one.

500ml bottle from Tesco, Enniskillen (£1.63):
Starting ridiculously weak, particularly the nose; it was a struggle to notice anything early on but it did pick up come the taste. Some nice citrus & pine came through with lighter malts & just enough hops & bitterness to be noticed but it wasn't a great beer by any stretch; drinkable but not worth seeking out I'm afraid.

On cask at The Black Sheep, Dublin.

Bronze-tinged gold with a tight carpet of white. Musty grain silo floor aroma with oily herbal fresh hops.
Honeydew fruit up front and fresh, leafy, slightly soapy hops.
Minty pea finish and herbal linger. Light-medium, some chew, round.

Hoppiest thing Hilden makes, which ain't saying much. A very green, vegetal blonde. I hear this makes the rounds at festivals; bit of a shame, because it's not very representative of the current wave of Irish pale ales. Easy enough to drink, though.

Labeled as an Irish Pale Ale.

*from notes

In bottle, 6/25/14: Burnished gold, lychee nose, toasty granola with passionfruit and cantaloupe hops, golden fig ending in a chewy body. English malt backbone with a big Galaxy kick. Sweet, but the hops manage to punch through - just.
