From the can it pours a hazy orange color, very orange juice like. A modest head rapidly dissipates, as does a thin ring of lacing.
The aroma opens with fruity notes of pineapple, peach and mango, as well as developing notes of herbal dank. Aromas of the vanilla and coconut adjuncts come into play, as does oaky notes of cognac.
Opens juicy with a light and muted tartness that’s very accessible to the palate. Good balance and complexity of flavors, as the barrel aging yields notes of Hennessy, vanilla and oak. A solid bready malt backbone brings out a moderate sweetness. It also supports grassy and peppery hops, as well as fruity notes of gooseberry, lime, peach, pineapple and coconut.
Medium bodied with a juicy and mouth coating mouthfeel. The carbonation is moderate. The finish is tart, very dry and refreshing.
This is one of the best sour IPAs I’ve had. Other examples from my experience tend to tilt sour heavy with a slight hops kick. This one, however, was deftly balanced with juicy flavors and just the right touch of tartness and unique barrel aged flavors.
