Very dark brown with a modest foam. Dark fruity flavors but bright malt. Prune and a hint of licorice. The dark malt has roasted flavors along with some blackened notes. Some Belgian yeasty character. Fairly dry and mineral-tinged finish.
There is a bitter edge to the black barley but there seems to be a hop note as well. Overall, this is a rich and dark brew that adds a new dimension to the American interpretations of traditional Belgian styles. From the 64 oz growler purchased at the brewery in South Park.
