Drank on tap a few weeks ago and notes taken from cellphone.
Appearance: Fairly transparent amber red color. Light head on the pour and low active carbonation. Some random lacing left behind at each level.
Smell: Syrupy, sugar, sweet tarts, and bright oak. Smells like a soda. Barley is very much absent. Messy malty sweetness dominates.
Taste: Sugary syrupy front. Mossy oak funkiness lingers throughout and into the finish. Very sweet with only hints of barley on the body. Palate is left with a dried out sugary texture.
Mouthfeel: Sugary sweetness leaves a funky dryness. Doesn't fit the style at all.
Overall: Barleywines are an incredibly tough style to craft and this young brewery unfortunately missed badly. Would certainly be open to trying other, more simple offerings from RBC but this one I could not recommend.
