May 2016, as Madness Night Boat London Porter. Shared 500 ml bottle at local tasting. ABV is 4.6%. Beautiful ruby colour (fairly pale for a porter), moderate beige head. Moderate malts in the aroma, not very roasty. A hint of caramel, vanilla and very thin coffee. Medium dry flavour, mild coffee, a hint of chocolate. Very moderate hops. Easy drinking.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of June 2018. Acquired a while back from Home Bargains. Another band-inspired beer, the label describes this as a London porter packed with cappuccino, chocolate, hazelnut and dark fruit aromas.
A: Poured into a pint mug. A deep reddish-brown colour with good clarity and intense carbonation. Forms a decent head of creamy beige foam that lasts for a minute or two before subsiding to a patchy surface layer.
S: Aroma of sweet dark malt with hints of dried fruit, subtle molasses, mild chocolate, a touch of coffee, faint roasted grain and ale yeast. Pleasant but quite subdued.
T: Tastes of subtle roasted malt with notes of mild molasses, dried fruit, faint burnt grain, a hint of bitter chocolate/coffee, ale yeast and faint stewed leaves. Slightly sweet, followed by a restrained malty bitterness upon swallowing.
M: Mouthfeel is smooth, tingly and dry, with lively carbonation and a somewhat insubstantial body. Could be a shade thicker for the style. Aftertaste of dried fruit, mild roasted malt, faint molasses, a twinge of coffee and ale yeast.
O: Decent enough but tending towards pedestrian. Looks alright, while the aroma and flavour are an unstimulating blend of dark malt, fruity notes, subtle molasses, faint coffee and ale yeast. Body is OK but could be creamier. Drinkable but forgettable - no need to hunt this one down.

Good looking dark ale
Flavour is Chocolate malty goodness, if a little thin on the mouthfeel but good level of carbonation . Not bad for a supermarket beer

330ml Bottle from Morrisons Supermarket (Edinburgh):
Body looks like dark coffee; Moderate size beige head has fairly good retention,
Aroma: Toffee, roasted nuts and black bread in the nose along with a faint hint of fruit. .
Flavor: tasting reveals some chocolate flavors and a touch of coffee. Middle of the road for style in strength and bitterness.
Smooth, medium body & medium-low carbonation.
O: a pleasant surprise, if not up with Fullers. Recommended.

330ml Bottle from Morrisons Supermarket (Glasgow):
Chocolate brown, opaque with a finger-sized, beige & creamy head with good retention, there is only a slight reduction in size over the opening couple of mins & some lacing on the sides.
Chocolate notes & hints of bitterness with a nutty backing & faint coffee. Not the most pronounced but not weak either, with background fruits, most notably cherries.
Similar to the nose, chocolate flavours & sweetness with some coffee & bitterness. Some cherries & perhaps some plum are detectable & it's finished off by some darker malts & sugar.
Smooth, medium body & similar carbonation which seemed strong for the style but not too gassy. Drinkable with some bitterness, accompanied by sweet patches & a dry finish.
It started off not too badly at all with nice malts, chocolate & coffee but it wasn't the most pronounced beer on the nose or taste buds. but it proved to be quite drinkable, particularly early on though with some fruits coming through that were off set the bitterness but the beer started to fade towards the end and as such it's not one I'd be likely to get again sadly.

Served cold from 330ml bottle into American nonic pint glass.
A) Dark ruby brown, tending toward black. Thin whitish film.
S) Chocolate and nuts. Quite promising.
T) Good. On the lightish side of roast malt flavour, but it lingers on in the aftertaste. Quite well carbonated, which lends an acidity to the taste when first drunk.
M) Again, good. Fizzy for a porter, but no complaints from me. The aftertaste is pleasant and mellow.
O) A good porter, recommended to any fans of the style. It is on the lighter side of the porter spectrum but that is fine by me as I like them all. My main complaint is why sell a 4.6% beer in 330ml bottles? Oh yeah, to make more money. It is a very noticeable trend in the UK and it is not a good one for the beer consumer.

Brewed by Portobello for the Madness Brewing Co. As in Suggs.
Black but without depth. Brown foamy head disappearing with alacrity.
Roasted malt and a hint of chocolate.
Taste reflects the aroma but with added fruit.
Rather light in body.
Quite refreshing for a porter.
