Pawky and dour – two words describing Scottish view of eternal melancholy of life. Five Laphroaig barrels and nine months of maturation under the sway of the dark gallows humour of Islay. Yet another twist on our Right Worthy Imperial Baltic Porter.

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a small, creamy, mocha-colored head. Smells of roasted, caramel malt, with a good dose of peat and dark chocolate, as well as ligher notes of dark fruit, licorice. and oak. Taste is a good balance of roasted, caramel malt, peat smoke, dark, bitter chocolate and dark fruit: plum, raisin, with lighter notes of licorice and oak as well as just a hint of vanilla also coming through. Finishes bittersweet, with a medium bitterness and some peat smoke, chocolate and dark fruit lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and light/medium carbonation.
A rather nice Scotch barrel-aged stout with a distinct, but not too heavy, peat smoke character that gets rounded out nicely by some sweet, caramel malt and bitter, dark chocolate, as well as lighter dark fruit, licorice and vanilla, making for a rather nice overall balance with a subtle complexity. Perhaps a bit too sweet for my personal taste, but quite an enjoyable brew all in all, as everything I've had from AF Brew so far, while coming at a very reasonable price as well. A brewery to watch, in my opinion.
