Thanks to Mark for picking me up this bottle! Double Raspberry Maigre takes on all the color that the fruit has provided. It's the deepest, darkest of reds, bordering on purple. The foam is quick to form and fizzy with that snap, crackle, pop approach. Effervescent. That purple tinged foam crackles down to a thin crown after a couple minutes, leaving behind a tightly knit microbubbled head. This is one impressive looking beer!
The nose is slam packed with raspberries, wow! The fruit is both acidic and sweet. They smell like they're straight from the vines, some ripe some slightly under. Even though there is that big raspberry brightness upront there is still a steady undercurrent of twang-y wheat. The wheat smells freshly cracked, a little damp, a little soured. The souring brings forth some mineral qualities that go perfectly with the fruit. The smell of this beer is making my mouth water.
The flavor brings with it gobs of raspberries as well. It's super bright and the fruit tends to lead more toward the acidic side, than the sweet, in the flavor profile. The wheat is tempered a bit but still has that twang. A quick flash of sweet evens things out before the soft acidity takes hold on the finish. Again, the raspberries are very vibrant and bright. This is a very well made fruit beer with gobs of raspberries.
The mouthfeel fits the style well, and this beer in particular. It's light and airy. The carbonation is just short of aggressive with that effervescent, prickly character that actually evens out on the swallow. The tartness gets at the back of the tongue and inside of the cheeks while the finish is fairly dry. This is an incredibly easy beer to put away.
I've had a couple of the different fruited Maigres in the past and the original one as well. The double raspberry is my favorite by far. Transient has done a great job inserting that bright, summertime quality of raspberries without making a sweeter fruit beer. This is a Berliner style wheat first and foremost with delicious fruit as a compliment. This beer disappears in the glass quickly. Pick some of this up if you see it, highly recommended.
