22 oz bomber sent from Donald into Thulsa Doom. I believe this is from late 2018 or early 2019. Draining the swam...cellar.
Pours a deep chocolatey brown which forms into a darker brown-to-black in the snifter. Has a thin ring of beige head that stays stable. Good lacing as the glass is swirled.
I get some slight chocolate cookie and slight vanilla cookie on the nose, the vanilla bordering on perfume-y. There are hints of nutty and dark malts, with some caramel. Also a bit of wet towel.
Flavor is reminiscent of bourbon barrel aged cookie dough, though perhaps a mild form of it. It is tasty, and drinks easy, if a touch artificial. The chocolate cookie is out front with a cookie dough center and it's wrapped in a faint bourbon barrel kick. Slight fried brown plantain comes in and while it's faint, it's present. Roasted malts come in and balance out the sweetness with a bit of grit and acidity. It borders on cloying but doesn't cross that threshold until the 4th or 5th sip. Vanilla perfume pops up again here in the flavor as it warms. Some dried prune/raisin as it warms too. It consistently buoys between under-performing and being great, so a 4 is about right.
Feel is slick and smooth, has a semi-creaminess to it, with a lot of carbonation and moderate alcohol burn. Stings the tongue and cheeks a bit, leaves a roasted coffee finish on the palate, and lingers with alcohol burn.
Overall, an okay bourbon barrel aged beer. It's a confusing adventure because the cookie part makes you think stout, but then the plantain/raisin thing really brings that dark ale forward. This beer is not shabby but it's not something I'd go for again. I'll probably struggle to finish the whole bottle, but if it were a 12 oz'er I'd enjoy the whole bit no problem.
Would seek out in a trade again : no

Best after it has warmed up a little. All flavors work well together. Very balanced chocolate, coffee, bourbon and vanilla.

King Swirly IV is an Imperial Bourbon Barrel Aged Dark Ale brewed with Cacao Nibs, Vanilla Beans, Coffee and Lactose, from King Harbor Brewing Company, California, ABV 10.80%. I am not sure that is really a "Brown Ale" but it sounds like the closest option. Anyway, it is beautiful and great tasting Ale and that is what counts. his is an anniversary ale.
Look: dark brown/ black with large (2 inch) mocca colored fluffy head that stays for a long time. As the head settles it leaves nice lacing.
Aroma: nice fruity malts, coffee and bourbon
Taste: The flavor is raisin bread, dark fruit, milk chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and significant bourbon. This beer has a BIG flavor and it is quite good.
Feel: full bodied, silky
