This is a rather difficult barleywine to track down, since Jasper Murdock's brewmaster only makes a single cask of this every November, and the Inn only usually serves it around Christmas, with the leftovers becoming the brewmaster's private reserve. This year I was lucky, they had a beer tasting dinner, and the 2002 Private Reserve was brought out.... and it was damn good.
It pours with a deep, deep amber body, with a thin almost nonexistant head. A deep malt smell, with ever so slight a hops aroma lingering in there somewhere. The roast on the malt comes out as a pleasant smokiness that rolls over the tongue, and just enough hops is present to give a tingly aftertaste. The mouthfeel is like a nice liquer, gentling rolling around the mouth. An excellent barleywine.
(Strangely, I don't normal care for barley wines, but this one was most fine)
(And I also had a sorbet made from the remnants of the 2000 and 2001 private reserve that was quite good, although novel)
