Canned 04/06/2021 and enjoyed on 2/24/2022
Appearance: Pours a jet black with a finger and a half of dark khaki colored foam
Smell: consists of a fairly rich bourbon aromas of earthy and woody aromas. There is a overlying sweetness mostly of maple and coconut that’s maybe a tad artificial, and slightly overwhelming the bourbon character but it’s fairly balanced. Other notes present are chocolate, roasted coffee, and oatmeal.
Taste: Yikes, it’s a bit harsh, shocking really and below expectations, but expectations were high for this one. The alcohol of the bourbon is there, but the taste is superficial and lacks rich and depth. The maple and coconut are flavorful, fairly balanced with the coffee and the chocolate and maybe some dry oats as well.
Feel: enjoyable, full-bodied with minimal carbonation. Still a bit harsh, with some alcohol heat, but expectations aside its fairly good.
Overall: There’s no denying the price tag, @ $17 for a 4-pack this beer should be better, but its still good. I am a sucker for coconut, and I really had high hopes considering the reputation hailstorm has built, but it’s a solid beer and I wont let the expectations ruin a good imperial stout. I’d buy it again, but there is better out there for less.
