On-draught @ Comrade in December 2014:

Served into a 10oz tulip. 10.465%.

HEAD: 1.5 finger wide head of tan colour. Beautifully creamy, soft, and thick. Supple. Light even coating of lacing sticks to the sides of the glass as the head recedes. Retention is fantastic - ~4 minutes.

BODY: Opaque black. No yeast or sediment is visible within.

Looks apt for a Russian Imperial Stout. Not unique or special, but generally appealing.

AROMA: Rich dark chocolate, chocolate malt, cream, ample malty sweetness, dark malts, caramel, faint herbal hops.

Not too sweet. The toffee and smoke promised by Comrade's menu isn't detectable at all. Aromatic intensity is merely mild.

I detect no overt yeast character, booze, or off-notes.

TASTE: Has a pretty standard dark and chocolate malt backbone, with some cream and caramel filling it out. Sadly, there's no roasted barley presence. The dark chocolate is nice, but could definitely be deeper and more expressive. Has a kiss of peat. I'm not getting any toffee or smoke; sorry, Comrade.

Alcohol is well hidden for how high the ABV is.

Balanced albeit sweet, with no noticeable hop flavour aside from a hint of evergreen and herb. Fairly simple for an imperial stout, with no real subtlety or intricacy to its straightforward no-nonsense flavour profile. I do like it. Average flavour intensity, duration, and depth.

TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, full-bodied, creamy, thick, and overcarbonated. Doesn't elevate the beer as a whole, but it suits the taste okay.

Not oily, gushed, harsh, rough, or scratchy. More of a coarse and dry mouthfeel would better play to its flavours (and to the Russian imperial stout style itself).

OVERALL: Downable but pedestrian. Too porter-like for an RIS. Ridiculously priced at $30 per growler; I'm glad I tried it on-draught.

This was an excellent Russian imperial stout, which you would expect from a brewery with this name and theme. Very well done. High alcohol, intense and packed with stout flavor, this is an ass-kicker, and well worth a try. As is custom for its heritage, there's nothing subtle about this beer. Big fan.

On tap at the brewery, typical stout appearance. Aroma is a touch of roasted malts. Flavor has a bit too much hop flavor which makes it a bit odd for me. I loved BA Quit Stalin but this fell short for me, maybe it was the Azacca hops?

Sampler at the brewery. Solid effort. Would probably be a little better with a touch of age on it. The bitterness seems a little sharp for style but that should mellow with age. I'd like to grab a bottle of his (if they bottled) and sit on it for a while.
