a new one from comrade, on tap at the new spruce down on blake street. comrade now comes with a lot of hype, so i followed suit and got one of these, but the beer is a pretty weak offering honestly. a honey ipa, makes sense on the surface, but the beer is too light in hops to be anywhere near an ipa, it just needs a ton more hops to even be close. very pale beer with a little haze to it, looking more like a wit than any ipa i have seen. smells good, i can get some of what must be honey sweetness right away, but i dont really taste the honey itself, the raw waxy pollenated floral natural product. if its there at all, the honey that is, its dosed very lightly and largely fermented out. i do like how dry the beer is, i appreciate no lingering sweetness in an ipa, but where are the hops at? light in nose and taste, and although the beer doesnt taste bad at all, its absolutely not an ipa. i have well documented mixed feelings about comrades rise to local fame here, but beers like this confirm some of my suspicious, its just not that good on the whole, and a strange choice to have out in the market following up superpower and hop chops, both of which deserve the attention they are receiving.
edit: got some good information that this isnt actually brewed with honey, despite the name, which makes real good sense after spending a whole glass of beer searching for something thats not there. appreciate the tip, and will have to revisit the beer in this light. still though, the lack of hops hurt it more than the lack of honey in my humble opinion...
