my favorite by far of the few variants i have had of this so far. the base beer is allowed to be itself a little more here, deep fudge and dark chocolate character without any chocolate actually being added, a little bit of char on the dark grain, and a ton of body without being sugary or overly alcoholic for what it is, this beer is nice on its own, but the addition of maple syrup and good coffee really set this off. the proportions are a lot more restrained than in the chocoberry edition, which was too much for my tastes. here the bitter dark coffee seems strong, fresh brewed, and concentrated with the dark grain against the rich earthy unmistakable maple sweetness, a really beautiful combination in both aroma and flavor, adding a ton of depth to this and highlighting the right parts of the base beer. the maple brings up light vanilla and brown sugar notes from the malt complexion, while the coffee has neat spice and woody notes to it, maybe espresso blended in or something, it has that oily complexity to it, amazing with the dark malts. i like this having some sort of appreciable english type yeast profile, not enough of them do anymore, and i like the smoothness the maple adds to the body, slick and rich going down, but there is great balance to it as well. amazing depth of flavor, really cool beer, among the best of the non hoppy beers these guys have done to date!
