Crime & Punishment Brewing Co. "Erebus"
$5/8oz. on tap at the brewery on 27 January 2023
Notes: "Named after the highest active volcano in Antarctica. Conditioned on cinnamon, cacao nibs, vanilla, ancho & guajillo peppers and blended with a stout barrel-aged in pleated bourbon barrels."
Look: The body is an opaque black beneath a short head of creamy dark tan foam that drops readily and leaves little in the way of lacing behind.
Smell: The aroma is fairly constrained given the contents. It's softly roasty and woody.
Taste: The taste reveals cocoa powder, roses, caramel, brown sugar, coconut, cinnamon, vanilla, dark bittersweet chocolate, and fruity dried peppers (Ancho and Guajillo are listed). There’s some apple and pear as well. It’s smoky and a little bit spicy with the heat building as you progress through the glass. The alcohol is clear but not brash, and along with the median bitterness it finishes dry; and due to the cinnamon almost minty-refreshing. Some peppery fruitiness, dull smoke, roastiness, and spice linger gently.
Feel: Medium full in body and gently bristling on the palate due to carbonation, alcohol, and cinnamon spice before warming to become creamy-smooth.
Overall: Interesting, unusual, and charming but perhaps not as well balanced as it could be.
