Canned 12/26/18, a bit of age but hopefully still good
Pours a large brown fluffy dense 1 finger head with good retention and lacing, very dark mahogany brown almost black color
Nose typical American stout, roasty malts, a little chocolate cocoa, little caramel toffee toasted malt and some nougat like candy notes, background spicy hop note
Taste more roasty malts out front, a little harsh acrid roast, bitterness from the roast mostly but also a bit of spicy earthy hops, char, roasted burnt coffee, some very dark chocolate and cocoa, light caramel toffee and toasted nougat, rich, little spice from the roasted malt, baking spice and hint of anise, medium bitterness increases to a high spicy hop bitterness and acrid roast lingering on the drier finish
Mouth is med to fuller bod, rich creamy like with medium-low carb
Overall eh, it's OK at first but that over acrid roast gets to be way too much for a basic American stout. If it was double the malt and abv and aged for a couple years then it would start to get nice, but the way it is is difficult to drink

Picked up a bottle of this at Julio's.
A - Poured into my Duvel tulip a nice dark brown almost black with a half finger mocha head that faded slowly to leave thin wisps.
S - Aromas of...not a whole lot. Not really getting any chocolate, no roast, barely any whiskey aromas. No barrel. Very, very light smoky notes and some faint bitterness. That said, if you put a full pour of this, and two ounces of any other average stout that had been watered down with 14 ounces of water...I would not be able to find a difference.
T - Taste actually brings something to the table. Very, very light chocolate, super faint smoke. Getting some light bitterness and some roast as it warms up more. Light malt sweetness, maybe some faint faint acrid coffee qualities. Whiskey barrels though....uhm, were they fourth fill barrels?
M - Mouthfeel is on the thin side, lowly carbonated. This is only 7ish%, yet, it still manages to have a bit of a syrupy quality to it. Odd.
O - Overall this was an unfortunate beer. Looked decent enough, but with as much aroma as a rinse pitcher with a splash of macro stout spilled in. Taste wasn't much better. Incredibly disappointed by the utter lack of barrel or whiskey notes in this. It's stunning that a brewery can make a beer that fails so hard.

Had the plain Nightshade Stout. Had noticeable tastes of chocolate and roasted coffee. Very smooth and tasty.

22oz bottle. Nice tasty stout. Nothing overpowers, very well balanced. Taste of coffee, hint of dark chocolate. The description has it as barrel aged (as of 3/17/16) I don't think so. This is a stout that stout lovers will enjoy.

I got a 16oz pour of this beer directly from the Brewery. It was delivered into a tulip glass and had a nice steady tan head with some Brussels lacing.
A: Dark black and sultry, this beer is black as night and has beautiful brown hues that get picked up when you hold it up to the light. There is a nice steady
S: I smell chocolate and some hints of coffee and roasted malt grains
T: This is a great beer and very smooth, the roasted dark malt is counterbalanced with a back of the throat sweetness. It isn't as creamy as a milk stout but it almost tastes like it could be. Very nice
M: Very smooth and velvety, the beer is medium thick on the tounge and is a nice representation of what a stout should.
O: This is a great beer, definite unique quality to it and it is almost bready with a roasty malt stout profile. If Belgian's invented stouts this is what they would make. Good job!
