ABANDONED BUILDING RUM BARREL AGED NIGHTSHADE STOUT 3/18/17

The third and last of the three barrel-aged Nightshade variations by this local brewery. The other two were very enjoyable. All three versions are now listed on BA as retired, but at this date one or more may in fact still be made or at least found on a local shelf or two.

Poured from the 22 oz. bottle into a Samuel Smith English tulip.

a: Opaque black with ruby highlights at the bottom. Two inch thick tan head receded to thick even surface foam and very dense lacing.

s: Slight roasty malt and alcohol.

t: Mainly mild roasty malt and black coffee, with mild to moderate rum notes. Hop and alcohol bite despite the relatively low ABV.

m: Medium to full, very nice smooth body and some carbonation tingle.

o: An easy drinking if mild stout, not so much rum flavor as some but pleasant enough.

22oz wax-topped bomber poured into a snifter.

A: Black. Two fingers of beige head settle after a time. Wispy lacing.

S: Alcohol and rum, piney and earthy hops with a citrus rind zing. Roasty char and cocoa powder.

T: Sweet rummy flavors fight for dominance with earthy and citrusy hops. Malts bring up the rear. Roasty and charred. Smokey and earthy hop finish.

M: Medium-thick body. Silky smooth. Some gently scrubbing carbonation.

O: The body has smoothed out a bit in the barrel.

Enjoyed on tap in tasting room. Get it while you can! Nightshade stout aged in Bully Boy rum barrels. The nose is of roasted malt, with coffee and a hint of the rum to come. The color is predictably dark and the mouthfeel is a little silkier than the normal Nightshade. You get the rum flavors through in the taste, but they are nice and smooth, no bite or harshness from the alchohol in the rum. A nice treat!
