22oz bottle poured into a goblet.
A: Pours a deep chestnut brown. No head whatsoever, and no apparent carbonation at all. No lacing.
S: Nutty, tootsie rolls and cocoa powder. Grape candy, plum. Traces of earthy yeast and faint spice. Ghostly whiffs of woody vanilla and bourbon.
T: Molasses, cocoa. Fruity with notes of wild berries, plum, and a hint of tart red fruits. Some earthy yeast. Quick flicker of green apple skin. Faint phenols and alcohol add balancing bitterness. Barrel is much more expressive than the nose would lead us to believe. Woody vanilla, caramel, and warming bourbon pull through toward the back and ride into the finish.
M: Medium-thick. Chewy and silky. Some warming alcohol. It's almost completely flat, unfortunately.
O: Lively carbonation is so important to these Belgian style beers. If there were any meaningful carbonation here, this would be a very different score. Other than that the beer is pretty solid. The yeast takes on a more restrained role than usual, which makes it a little more straightforward. For the love of God, just get it carbonated! There's a lot of good work here that's marred by one minor flaw.
