La Calavera "Blessed Beaver"
on tap @ Beer'Linale, Barcelon, ES on 23 November 2022
Notes: This is a smoked Imperial stout listed at 10% ABV although I've seen it listed elsewhere at 10.8%. The appearance is as expected with a black body beneath a short head of tan. It displays limited head retention and lacing although that may very well have to do with the server that poured it and the glass that it was put into. It smells of nuts, toffee, fruits (berries, raisins), coffee, and grainy malt. The flavor follows with more nuttiness, a more intense fruitiness (no new notes added), and some mild to medium smokiness. The smoke isn't acrid at all, and enhances the fruitiness and roastiness. It's median bitterness is helped along to a dry finish by a clear but soft alcoholic bite. It's medium bodied on the upper end and smooth across the palate with a fine-bubbled, moderate to median carbonation. I really appreciate the refinement in this beer. It could easily have been overdone but it's not, and that makes it an easy sipper even at 10%.
