BOTTLE courtesy of Silverpig who brought it to me from Shanghai - thanks, mate! 330ml with an uncommon pull-tab aluminum cap. Black and white label art nods towards the panda theme of the brewery. Brown glass.
"Safe Date Ginger Golden Ale." 12 degrees Plato. 5% ABV.
APPEARANCE: Pours a filtered golden body - clear and vibrant. Head is off-white and a bit on the thin side. Cobwebby lacing adheres to the glass' sides as it recedes, which takes a good ~5 minutes.
AROMA: Ginger is unmistakable - very prominent. Aside from that, there's not a lot happening - some 2-row barley/pale malt, some mild floral hop aromatics, a blip of Tripel-like sweet honeyed malt. Clove honey aromatics (from malt).
TASTE: Has a nice ginger presence - enough to make it clear this is a ginger ale, but not so much it's overwhelming. Raw ginger lingers into the aftertaste, finishing herbal and with a bit of bite. Pale/golden malts comprise the malt backbone, with floral hop flavours keeping it from tasting too sweet or simplistic.
It's very no-frills for a ginger golden ale, but it ticks all the boxes it needs to. Not horribly intricately built, but it's pleasant and approachable.
TEXTURE: Smooth, dry, overcarbonated, medium-bodied, and somewhat refreshing. Its dryness renders it parching on the back end.
OVERALL: The ginger could taste more fresh and the beer could be more complex. Depth of flavour isn't impressive, either. It's a drinkable ginger ale that I'm sure is a nice change of pace from Snow beer when in mainland China, but I can't say it's a horribly impressive beer in its own right. Worth trying, sure, but not a beer I'd buy regularly unless I was tired of Chinese macros while traveling.

Bought from an expat grocery store in Jing'An District in Shanghai, China.
Poured from the 330mL bottle into a pint glass. The beer is a cloudy golden-orange color (a bit like a hefeweizen) with little head that quickly dissipates.
The beer smells a bit like dish soap, with a hint of the promised ginger coming through faintly. More citrusy and a bit bready, but that dish soap tang kind of overpowers it.
The taste is better, with a definite ginger note on top of honey and slight bread flavor. In the finish there is a honey citrusy note that is pleasant and refreshing. A bit stronger taste than ginger ale but not as strong as ginger beer.
A fun experiment here in China, but I don't think I will get this again.
