an oak aged sour with a few different strains of brett, a nice and funky beer, quite mature, lots of oak and some definite wine character, i would not be at all surprised if thats what was in these barrels before this beer, but they didnt specify at the brewery where i had it. this is easily the most process intensive beer i have had from these guys, and while i suspect it was a kettle sour first, as the brett seems unlikely to have developed this much acidity on its own, there is still a lot that went into this, including some extended ageing. i dont know if it actually has mandarins in it or not, its just one of the fruity notes i get in the aroma and flavor of this, along with fresh mango, ripe peach, green grape, and pineapple candy, its tropical and bright, and the acidity is quite high, but there is also a well established bretty funk through the whole thing, so quite a dynamic mixed fermentation profile. the beer could have a little more carbonation to give it the uplifting feel to match the flavors, but i like what they have going here, and i reckon its quite unique overall. some bottle conditioning would be cool, but i have never seen a bottled beer from these guys. i liked this a lot, and its nice to see that a brewery who can do a kolsch and a clean french saison so well can also do something much more interesting like this to close to the same standard...
