Draft pour at the brewery

Pours dark and oily. Robust nose, bourbon, oak, roasted malt and a bit of malted soy. Creamy and smooth, a bit less sharp than most RISs. Nice bourbon barrel character, roasty without the acrid char.

2020 vintage (crowler)

Appearance: Pours espresso colored with a one finger head that leaves clumps of lacing

Smell: The Bourbon dominates but doesn't overwhelm; roast, chocolate and oak are also discernable

Taste: Bourbon and roasted malt flavors merge, up front, with a hint of chocolate underneath; a lot of oak in the finish; slightly boozy

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with moderate carbonation; some warmth in the gullet

Overall: A really impressive BA stout that benefited from two years to mellow out

On tap:
Pretty large frothy light beige head that sparkles the glass wall as I let it warm.

Nose has the lightest hint of coffee washed aside by the barrel. But the tide brings in chocolate, bourbon, whiskey-barrel char, cherry cigar and light coconut notes.

Taste thins the nose greatly, but has its own good points. Chocolate and cola on a thinner than expected opening feel. The latter is aided by the bourbon notes and brings back memories of when whiskey and coke was more often drunk. The more mellow back end brings a pecan pie-like nutty, charred brown sugar impression.

The Gold Cup series rarely disappoints, and this offering fits dead in the solid range. The nose was more intriguing than the taste, but it wasn’t a letdown.
